Notifications and paging

When an escalation path pages you, Regen decides how to reach you from your own notification settings. Every person sets these up for themselves under Notifications in their personal settings, and each person's settings apply only to them.

Getting this right matters most for whoever is on call: if Regen cannot wake you up, a page does no good.

Contact methods

A contact method is a way Regen can reach you. You can use:

MethodNotes
PushA notification on a device you have registered with Regen.
ChatA message in Slack or Microsoft Teams. See Connect Slack.
EmailYour account address, plus up to 3 more you add.
SMSA text to a phone number you add and confirm. You can add up to 2 phone numbers.
Phone callA voice call to a phone number you have already confirmed. It is removed with that number.
WhatsAppA WhatsApp message to a phone number you have already confirmed.

Your account email is set up for you, cannot be deleted, and does not count towards the limits above.

If SMS does not appear as an option, text messaging is not available on your workspace.

Confirm a phone number

  1. Enter the number with its country code, in international format, for example +14155550123. Spaces, dashes and brackets are fine.
  2. Regen texts you a 6-digit code. It expires after 10 minutes.
  3. Enter the code to confirm. Until you do, the number shows as Unverified and Regen will not page it.

Use Resend code if the text does not arrive.

Add calls and WhatsApp

Once a phone number is confirmed, choose Add for calls or Add for WhatsApp next to it. There is no second confirmation: Regen uses the number you already confirmed. A button disappears once that method has been added for the number.

Confirm an email address

Regen sends a confirmation link to any extra address you add. The link expires after 24 hours. Use Resend link if you need another.

Test a method

Once a method is confirmed, choose Test next to it to send yourself a test notification.

Notification rules

A rule says which methods Regen uses, and when, for a type of page. There are two:

RuleUsed for
High urgencyCritical alerts, and critical or high severity incidents.
Low urgencyWarning and info alerts, and medium or low severity incidents.

Each rule is a list of steps. A step has a delay and one or more contact methods:

  • The first step must have no delay, so you are always notified straight away.
  • Later steps are sent only until you acknowledge the page. Once you acknowledge it, the remaining steps stop.
  • A delay counts from when the page started, not from the previous step. Choose 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes.
  • Use up to 10 steps, and up to 5 methods in each.
  • Two steps cannot have the same delay, and every step needs at least one method.

Workspace admins can change which rule each severity uses under System → Paging urgency, separately for alerts and for incidents. This does not change which escalation path an alert goes to. High urgency pages are never held back by anyone's quiet hours.

A plain-language preview under each rule shows what will happen, for example: Immediately: Push · After 5 min: SMS, Call.

A common setup for high urgency is push straight away, then a text and a phone call after a few minutes if nobody has responded.

Only confirmed methods can be chosen.

Quiet hours

Quiet hours stop low-urgency pages from waking you. During them, low-urgency pages go to your email instead, and you get a summary when quiet hours end. Nothing is dropped.

  • Set separate start and end times for weekdays and weekends, and choose your time zone.
  • Tick Still page me while I am on call if you want to be paged normally during a shift, even in quiet hours.

The time zone here only decides when your quiet hours start and end. It is not a personal time zone setting: schedules show times in the schedule's own time zone, and other pages use your browser's.

Can Regen wake you up?

Email and chat alone cannot reliably wake someone. If you have no confirmed phone number and no push device, a banner on your Notifications page warns you. If you are about to go on call, it says when your next shift starts.

A second warning appears if escalation paths can page you at high urgency but your high-urgency rule has no phone step. Add a phone number and a call or text step to fix it.

Admins can see the same thing for the whole team on the Users page, where each person's paging readiness is shown, and can send a person a reminder to finish setting up.

Pages sent by text, email or WhatsApp include a link. Opening it shows the alert's severity and title and an Acknowledge button, so you can acknowledge without signing in to Regen.
